Movie Research: Us

What conventions of the genre Thriller does the movie "Us" have?

First off, one of the conventions the movie "Us" has from the Thriller genre is its dark and eerie setting. The movies setting of the beach and the underground tunnels the characters encounter help to build the suspense that thriller movies have. The dark setting and conflict between characters also aids in building suspense. The movie also uses close up shots and tracking shots, which help to create tension and immerse the viewer into the world of the characters.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

I liked how the film used close ups in order to convey the characters emotions and reactions to real time events which are happening in the film, the close ups truly do a good job of creating emotion and suspense. I also liked the use of low angles when showing the doppelgangers, as it caused them to appear bigger and daunting, standing as an intimidating force, which in turn added to the already built up tension of the movie. I also enjoyed how over-the-shoulder shots were used, as it properly demonstrated the characters relationships and dynamics with one another, which causes the viewers relationship to strengthen with the characters, which makes later events all that more impactful. I also liked the use of silhouettes, as it creates more suspense and tension.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming for your final task?

I did not like how the film used the dark/low lighting so frequently as at times it made it hard to make out what exactly was happening in the scenes. While it did add to the suspense, it would have been nicer to see what was happening in full detail. My group and I probably will not use as much low lighting in our final task. Another thing I did not like was how subtle the makeup was for the doppelgangers. While it was important they maintained their appearance as the same, some more distinct makeup could have been better for the film. The makeup used in our final task will probably be more distinct.
