Production Blog Editing Music Video

The editing for this project was a roller-coaster of emotions and definitely much more difficult than the first project. For the first project, all I had to do was color grade overall, so I had to make one preset and apply it to the entire commercial. For the music video however, I needed to color grade differently for different scenes. For the color grading, I had to use the lightroom app, which required a premium subscription in order to color grade video. To get around this, we used an email to claim the seven day free trial. For example, I wanted the beach scenes to have a warmer, more orange tone to them, Outer-Banks style. However for the city scenes, like walking and getting ice cream, I was going for a cooler tone for the surroundings while making the two look warm, to show that they were the most important thing in the scene. The color grading process caused me to spend time learning how to properly color grade every individual scene, knowing what scenes needed what. Color grading wasn't the only thing I had to do though, I also had to play around with the whites and shadows of the clips, making them really pop how I wanted. The first couple scenes were especially hard to edit since I needed to differentiate the vibe of the character from the background. By doing this, it allowed me to create a bigger impact on the screen than there would have been if I had just used the raw video footage. This was not the only tricky thing throughout this process however, composing the video clips together also took a little bit of time. Since there was many re-shoots, there was an excess amount of clips, and since they all started the same for each scene, it was hard to distinguish between what was the useable clip. This was nothing hard, just annoying to deal with and took a good amount of time, time that we needed. To overcome this problem, I had to group the videos that had the same "thumbnail" together and title them based off of what scene they were. For these grouped scenes, going through these clips did not take long, since each one was around 10 seconds long before cutting. After finding all the clips needed, this was when I did the color grading mentioned earlier. I then made sure to put them into CapCut, which was our best option since it was a free editing software. Even after all the color grading I still added some touch ups in CapCut. I lowered the brightness on some scenes and added vignette to others, making small changes.
