Production Blog Filming at Bens House

On Sunday, my group and I began filming my/our very first production. It was sort of difficult to come up with a time where everyone was available due to me being at work and other group members having other events like soccer and football games. Me being the cameraman, I was responsible for bringing the camera, adapters, and the laptop we would be editing on. When I was getting ready to begin filming, I noticed where the suns position was not working with the camera, and made the scenes we were filming look very bright, and sometimes even barely able to see my group members. I made sure to adapt, and we moved to an area with more shade, and even waited a little bit for the sun to move. Filming the first scene was somewhat of a challenge; as the cameraman, I needed to get down on the ground, and seeing as my group members and I were in the road, I had to act quick, getting the right shot before any cars appeared in the road. This scene had to be re-filmed a couple times, but in the end my group and I got it done. The second scene was tricky, as I needed to record our main actor, Ben, running towards the camera. At first, I was just back jogging, but quickly noticed that this caused the camera to shake, as I hadn't brought a Gimbal, making the scene look bad. I had the idea to hang out the window of Carson's car, to make the shot steady, and it worked! This scene was also the most fun to film. Now I had to move onto the next scene, of Ben drinking the Gatorade. It was tricky shooting this, since it had to be one continuous shot which transitioned from the second scene, (me in the car) to the third scene, (a side shot of Ben). We wanted it to be smooth, but it needed a lot of patience and determination to look good. Nonetheless, I made sure the scene looked good and I'd say it came out OK. The fourth scene was by far the easiest to shoot, as all I had to do was track Ben collapsing and then zoom in onto him. As cameraman, I had to listen to what the director said, and take angles that the director thought were best. The fifth scene was a little trickier, since I had to make sure the Powerade bottle was easily identifiable as Powerade, all while getting all of the shot, but with help from the director, I was able to make sure the scene came out great, and looked OK. The last scene was the most mediocre in terms of filming; I shot Ben getting energized and then stayed in the same spot while he ran off, watching him get smaller and smaller. This scene was not too hard, but played a major role in overall commercial. This entire process took a little over three hours, including the wait for the sun to move a smidge, but the jobs not done, editing still needs to be done to make this whole.
